Tornado touched down in Wake County Saturday, authorities say
An EF-1 tornado touched down in Wake County on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The tornado touched down in Fuquay-Varina at 5:28 p.m., and it ended just a few minutes later at 5:31 p.m., the NWS said.
According to the NWS, the tornado reached peak wind speeds of 100mph. Its path was 1.5 miles long and 30 yards wide, the NWS said.
“The tornado’s initial touchdown occurred in a field south of the intersection of Wilbon Road and Judd Parkway and was observed on video lofting debris in the air but not producing any damage,” the NWS said.
The tornado uprooted several large trees along its path, according to the NWS.
The NWS said the tornado crossed an open field, resulting in roof damage and the loss of an awning and outdoor electrical equipment at a church.
